2000 ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS

WHITEHOUSE-CRAWFORD, TEN OTHER PROJECTS RECEIVE WALLA WALLA 2020 ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS

The Grand Prize in the year 2000 Walla Walla 2020 Architectural Awards competition went to Salvation! LLC, owner of the Whitehouse-Crawford Building at 3rd and Cherry in downtown Walla Walla, for the rescue, restoration, renovation and reuse of the historic 1904 planning mill for use as a gourmet restaurant and winery. Three other major awards were made and seven projects were honored with certificates of merit in a June 19 public awards ceremony at Seven Hills Winery Tasting Room.

General contractor for the Whitehouse-Crawford project was Ketlesen Construction of Walla Walla. The Grand Prize certificate mentioned the "heroic" efforts of Salvation! LLC owners Carl and Sonia Schmitt in saving and restoring the historic building, which had been targeted for demolition by the City of Walla Walla and out-of-town motel developers. Other major awards for work on historic buildings went to Christophe Baron for the Cayuse Vineyards tasting room, 17 E. Main in the Barrett Building, Nostdal Construction, contractor; to Rick and Patricia Wylie, owners and contractors, for the 1917 Brae Burn Apartments at 14 N. Clinton; and to the Walla Walla Housing Authority, owner and contractor, for the 1914 Belmont Apartments at 9 N. Spokane.

Certificates of merit in the downtown category went to Douglas and Malinda Saturno, owners and contractors, and Roach and Monahan, tenants, for the restoration, renovation, and reuse of the second story of the 1889 Baumeister Building, 27 1/2 W. Main, as law offices; to Stone Creek Furniture, Brian Gaines, owner, Mick Shaul Construction, contractor, for the restoration, renovation and reuse of the second floor of the 1928 building at 109 E. Main as sales space; to "Holly's Flowers and…", Brian, Gerwyn, and Greg Jones, building owners, Winter Construction, contractor, for the rehabilitation of the 1912 funeral parlor at 130 E. Alder as a flower shop, including exterior work completed following the 1999 adjoining fire; to Eurospa and Tan, 1West Alder in the historic Drumheller building, Joanne and Robert Wagar, business owners, Gary Wasemiller, building owner, Theron Smith, architect, Tom Wagar, contractor, for interior restoration and renovation as a health spa; and to Waterbrook Winery, Eric and Janet Rindal, owners, My Grandmother's Garden, contractor, for the addition of pleasing landscaping at their wine tasting room on the plaza at lst and Main.

Certificates of merit for "Painted Lady" decorative exterior paint work on historic residences went to David and Loree Dyer for the 1910 Lowden home at 601 S. Howard, and to Gail Anne and Gustavo Saldivar for the 1903 Victorian home at 4 N. Division.
